Seems some organic farmers and communities have had enough and are turning the tables on big ag giant Monsanto. I applaud them wholeheartedly. Monsanto has been suing hundreds of farmers and destroying everything in it’s path. It’s about time to show those big ag bullies that enough is enough!
Monsanto’s transgenic seeds are patented and if their seeds contaminate an organic or conventional farm, Monsanto sues for patent infringement. Of course it doesn’t matter that their seed probably blew off of a truck or was blown across town. They have managed to strip the rights away from organic and conventional farmers with full support from the government. It’s infuriating that this can happen. No protection and a blind eye is what these hard working farmers get. But now it’s time to fight back!
According to Grist, “The case, Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, et al. v. Monsanto, was filed in federal district court in Manhattan and assigned to Judge Naomi Buchwald. Plaintiffs in the suit represent a broad array of family farmers, small businesses and organizations from within the organic agriculture community who are increasingly threatened by genetically modified seed contamination despite using their best efforts to avoid it. The plaintiff organizations have over 270,000 members, including thousands of certified organic family farmers.”
I will definitely follow the progress of this case…and keep my fingers crossed it’s one step of many in the right direction.
Some days with all the negative stuff in the world, something this simple and pure just makes me smile. There are lots of good things to be grateful for, and this dancing penguin is one of them!
Earth Day is Friday and the theme this year is “A Billion Acts of Green.” What will your act of green be? If you have something in mind share the commitment by taking a pledge. You can also organize an Earth Day event or attend an Earth Day event in your area. You can pick something that works for you. It can be as easy as deciding not to use plastic bags that day, or conserve water by shaving time off lawn watering, or decide to walk instead of drive. So many small adjustments in our lives make such a great impact. I walked tonight to run some errands. Yes it did take longer, but no car used and got in some exercise. Let’s start a People for Green Justice green act pledge. Tell me what your green act will be by leaving a comment or posting it on the Facebook page.
Does your office order in for lunch? Do you go out to lunch in a group? Do you bring your lunch to work? Whatever the case may be, get involved and get your coworkers involved. Go to Meatless Monday and get a resource kit. Don’t worry, it just means clicking and printing, easy as pie! Just attach it to the menu that goes around the office. The information is there if people would like to learn and join in. I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten 100% participation, but I feel any is better than none. I also know it can be uncomfortable being the person that tries to spread the movement. I learned just not to be pushy, it’s there if you’d like to try it and I’m here if you have questions. That is my approach. Although it would be kind of funny if I stood over everyone’s shoulder awkwardly to see what they order. But I don’t want a black eye you know, that’s no good for anyone. So check out the materials and try it out!
