Meatless Monday!

If you haven’t gotten on board with Meatless Monday, get on it!  Funny story, last week I went to dinner with a friend and I ordered the veggie burger.  Now you’d think that by ordering the “no meat” patty, people would understand that to mean you don’t eat meat or to at least ask.  Instead I was served a veggie burger with bacon on top.  I looked at the oddity on my plate wondering how that didn’t occur strange to any of the cooks or our server.  I decided to just remove said bacon instead of being a jerk, but wow, I mean wow.

On the plus side I ordered the Earth burger at Umami Burger this weekend and it was delicious.  I don’t know how they make it, but that mushroom and edamame patty are amazing.  I recommend giving it a try. Alright, I have a busy day today at work, gotta run.  Go Meatless Monday!!

Lawsuit Filed in Beef Over Taco Bell ‘Meat’

I must put my two cents in before presenting you this article.  First of all, did anyone truly believe meat from Taco Bell was 100 percent beef?  I think people turn the blind eye in order to satisfy the powerful cravings of the stomach, I get it, but to find out that only 35 percent of the meat filling is actually meat, guh-roooosssse.  (Nice intro huh? And doesn’t that taco look delicious?  Ew.)

By Gregory Karp, Tribune Newspapers

“Where’s the beef?” Wendy’s restaurants once famously asked through its advertising, a swipe at its competitors’ burgers.

The same question is now being asked by a California woman regarding Taco Bell’s beef products, which she claims contain very little meat. So little, in fact, that she’s brought a false-advertising lawsuit against the huge fast-food chain. (more…)

Day 3, Hump Day Done. Smooth Sailing Now!

They say day 3 will be the most difficult.  It’s the day your body is really kicking out the toxins and it can give you headaches and who knows what else.  I had no side effects, maybe a mild headache for a bit.  The hardest thing about yesterday was once again, lunch with coworkers.  Watching them all eat sushi while I munched on my raw salad. Don’t get me wrong, my salad was delicious, but I’m feeling like a big vegetable!  Now that I’m through the hump I won’t be informing you of my play by play progress.  But you can keep up with me on the Facebook page.  I just don’t want to bore the crap out of you by reporting my eating habits every day.  That could be worse than people that post photographs of every meal they eat on Facebook!  You know who you are, and if you do that, STOP IT, you’re chile relleno will never look as appetizing to us!

Alright – Day 3 Menu

Breakfast - Banana, lemon and cayenne water.

Lunch - Salad with spring mix, chickpeas, corn, edamame, red beans, peas, sunflower seeds, radish and balsamic.

Afternoon Snack - Raw almonds and a banana.  (I know, 2 bananas in a day, I live on the edge)

Before exercise - Green drink, celery with natural peanut butter

YOGA - 75 minutes of yoga.  Love the instructor Nicole at Yoga Blend!

Dinner – Quinoa with green beans sautéed in Soyaki sauce and topped off with flaxseed oil.

Okay, done and on to day 4.  I should also say that this isn’t exactly a cleanse in the same sense as a master cleanser or the like.  It will cleanse you, but it’s main focus is to get you eating healthier and back to the basics.  Our bodies have been introduced to a number a synthetic food ingredients in recent years. Food isn’t supposed to have a 20 year shelf life or the same ingredients as silly putty.  You can’t deny the epidemic of obesity and diabetes skyrocketing, and a lot of it in children.  So while I love love love all of these horribly tasty foods, I’m going to try this and see if I can tell the difference. My own experiment with my body.  I think we should be educated about the food we are putting in our bodies instead of allowing the food industry across the board to treat us like lab rats.  (Insert applause here :) )

Just Completed Day 2

As I said before, my breakfast started with lemon and cayenne water.  I realized after the fact that I definitely over cayenne peppered myself.  Nothing bad happened, it was just some mighty spicy water.  You only have to put an 8th of a teaspoon in and I think I put a whole teaspoon in.  But after reading the health benefits of cayenne pepper I wanted to dump the whole bottle in!  That stuff is apparently a miracle pepper offering all kinds good things including being an instant cure to a heart attack.  That’s right, I read multiple articles confirming that a glass of warm cayenne water during a heart attack will turn that baby around.  Alright, enough cayenne pepper hype, here’s my day 2 menu.

Breakfast - Water with lemon and cayenne pepper.

Lunch - Same salad as lunch yesterday with the addition of shredded radish.

Afternoon Snack – Raw almonds and celery sticks.  Had another water, with lemon only this time.

Dinner – Red pepper and hummus.  Then I attempted my fresh made green drink.  First problem, the blender.  I can see why a juicer would be preferable.  I put kale, celery, spinach, green apple and fresh ginger in the blender.  It came out like what I think the job of a garbage disposal would do.  Even with adding water it was chunky-ish.  Mainly the leafy veggies turn into a weird green pulp.  Then when poured in my cup it separated from the water.  So I ended up eating it with a spoon.  Clearly I am not a juicing pro yet :)

Today was harder than yesterday.  After lunch I was craving all the bad stuff.  But I pulled through.  I got home from work and had a Vega Sport Performance drink (tried it for the first time) and went for a run. That made the hunger subside.

Just 19 more days to go.  Come on day 3, let’s do it!

Onward Day 2 of the Cleanse!

I made it through day one of the cleanse.  It was actually quite easy since I don’t have to fast like many other cleanses.  Here’s what day one looked like for me.

Breakfast – small bowl of organic rolled oats, made with water.

Lunch – Salad with spring mix, chickpeas, edamame, peas, beets, cucumber and sunflower seeds with a touch of oil and balsamic.

Afternoon Snack – Probiotic green drink.  (co-workers made ew faces at it, but it was tasty)

Late Afternoon Snack – handful of raw almonds.

Dinner – Heirloom spinach salad with red pepper, celery, avocado, tomatoes and a homemade dressing of flaxseed oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic mustard.  It was delicious!

Between all of that I had a lot of water.  I’ve started day 2 with lemon and cayenne water.  It’s not perking me up, but it’s making me aware of my tongue.  I was happy I am doing this even more because while driving to work I was listening to NPR and they reported that tuna and swordfish was sampled in Southern California and it had 3 times the safe mercury level.  Some of the fish was in LA.  Apparently the Fish Advisory commented by saying, “the results are misleading.”  Interesting, maybe you want to elaborate!!  Anyhow, I digress.  Back to my lemon cayenne drink!
