Finding a green job is no easier than finding any other kind of job in today’s economy, but it can be done. Try these strategies:
- Consider what type of green job you are interested in. Are you currently training for a job in renewable energy technology or waste management? Check job boards and listings that are focused on these industries. Are you looking for a job that involves working with plants? Try the National Park Service or local park services; your local organic farms, greenhouses, or nurseries; your local botanical garden; or even green landscaping services. Are you looking for a job in an industry that is not stereotypically green, but hoping to find an employer that is environmentally-conscious? In that case, you may want to pursue more traditional job search and networking strategies, but mention in your cover letters and interviews that you are eager to find an ecofriendly employer.

Those of us in the developed world use inordinate amounts of water for personal use, and most of it isn’t used efficiently. I’ve just moved into a new house and other than my books, clothes and some random possessions, I don’t own any furniture or the basic housewares. I thought this is the perfect opportunity to see how I can get myself set up as eco-friendly as possible. “Going green” is an almost nauseatingly cliche mantra that’s been picked up –sometimes falsely — by corporate America, soccer moms, and the least granola people you can think of. But through the hard work, research studies and dedication of some very persistent individuals, being more conscientious about how humans impact the environment and making more sustainable choices in the way we feed, transport and fuel ourselves and our daily lives, we might finally be on track to getting on Mother Earth’s good side. While we ignored them for decades — or even centuries — these conservationists, naturalists, writers, artists, explorers, politicians, and even royals have worked tirelessly to protect our natural world and clue us into the interconnectedness of life, way before “going green” became trendy. Energy Star has recently taken a beating from EPA officials, stating that their labeling committee isn’t adequately policed or strictly enforced enough for the Energy Star label to carry much clout. Investigations revealed that the program was susceptible to fraud and misuse from companies making false claims on energy savings to gain consumer preference. (more…)
