A year ago in October, Baltimore public schools joined the Meatless Monday movement. Of course they faced some protests from the meat industry, go figure. But they’ve managed to push through. The program isn’t just about cutting out meat, it’s teaching students about health and diet. Something that is important today with obesity and diabetes at the top of our country’s health issues. Being committed to this movement is being committed to learning about our food system. Know what you are consuming and the personal and environmental impact it has. Again, no one is saying to become a vegetarian, just to cut back. Everything in moderation. No one ever needs the triple meat burger for lunch, so gross.
Anyhow, become part of the solution and join the Meatless Monday movement!
Go to the Meatless Monday site and download your own toolkit to help spread the movement. This is what I did and I attach it to the office lunch menu on Mondays. You can download whichever toolkit suits you, general, campus, community, etc. This way there is some info on why people should forgo meat for that day. I also try to choose a menu with good veggie options. I’ve gotten a pretty good turnout. Try it for yourself!
One of the most wasteful practices is to-go food containers or one time use dish ware and cutlery. The trend of biodegradable products is gaining steam. I went to two places yesterday that both use Michigan Green Safe Products. Our office ordered lunch and all of our to-go containers were compostable and so was the cutlery. Then I stopped in a tea shop and the cup said eco on it and the front door had a sign about Michigan Green Safe. So I decided to check it out. They make high quality earth friendly products. Eco beverage cups, hot and cold, cutlery made out of corn and to-go containers, all compostable and really affordable. I encourage businesses to go this route. This place is a Detroit company, but you can order online. Make your business more earth friendly!
