Going Against the Grain

I’ve been inspired by two things recently, urban organic farming and one musician with a love for organic farming and an eclectic spirit.  What has emerged from this is a plan for a documentary film starring Detroit urban farms as the backdrop for an unconventional musician’s tour.

Please read the synopsis for “Going Against the Grain.”  We’ve got just a little over two months before farming season begins to wind down, so we’re moving fast.  It’ll be down and dirty, just need funds for a cinematographer and sound person initially. We’d appreciate any support you can give! (more…)

Plan for World’s Largest Urban Farm

Of any city struggling through tough economic peril and leaving the question of what will become of it, is Detroit. Government corruption, crime, record high unemployment and a quickly fleeing population have turned this once industrial leader into a forgotten city left to rot. What is left standing is not a pretty picture. After several failed revitalization ideas, one man that calls Detroit home decided to invest in his city with an unconventional idea. This idea is Hantz Farms, planned to be the world’s largest and for profit urban farm. (more…)

Organic Produce Trumps Corporate Crops!

I visited the Brother Nature urban farm in the city of Detroit.  We toured the acre lot situated in a neighborhood most would be wary of driving through.  While the area consisted mostly of boarded up houses and buildings, a common landscape in Detroit, there is a strong sense of community for the few left and it seems these gardens are helping to plant the seeds of change. Meatless Monday at Work

I attempted a Meatless Monday today at work.  It didn’t go 100% meatless, but it wasn’t a complete failure.  Only 3 out of 14 ordered meat.  I feel pretty good about that, especially knowing the meat ordering is usually 14 out of 17. I’m trying it again next week and see if I can get the rest of these carnivores to give up one lunch. Is heckling them while they are reading the menu wrong??

I’m into month 4 now of being vegetarian and boy have I been craving a cheeseburger like you wouldn’t believe. And while watching the world cup yesterday I had to turn down tacos al pastor! But I’m hanging in. I need to find a great veggie burger option STAT!!!  I have some great vegetarian and vegan recipes I’ve been saving.  Time to start taking my veggie cooking skills to the test.

Can I Get My Coworkers To Go Meatless on Monday?

I know it’s not Monday, but I’m preparing to introduce Meatless Monday to the coworkers in my department. They are aware I have made the decision recently to go completely meat free, but now I will be asking them to join me one day a week. I’m pretty sure all but a couple of them order meat every day, so this will be a bit of a battle I’m sure. Maybe they will feel I am pushing my beliefs on them and decide to ignore my request or maybe they will be supportive of the cause or even me…is that asking a lot of coworkers? You’ll find out when I report the happenings of our upcoming Monday lunch order.
You can join me in your workplace. My plan isn’t hard at all. I went to the Meatless Monday site and downloaded their Meatless Monday Kit. The kit includes material to explain what Meatless Monday is and questions people may have. This will cut down the amount of explaining I have to do, I hope. The hard part will be finding a restaurant menu that will offer enough vegetarian options. YIKES!  Alright, wish me luck!
