Livable Future Blog – Q&A Niman Ranch
I came across an interesting article on the Livable Future Blog today. It’s a Q&A with Nicolette Hahn Niman of Niman Ranch. Niman Ranch is a humane and sustainable farm that does not use antibiotics or hormones and uses all vegetarian feeds. She makes a lot of good points in this Q&A, and it’s obviously not an article to sway you into becoming a vegetarian. I believe it does support one of my previous posts regarding people wanting to know where their food comes from and how it gets to them. Complacency with our food is what the “they” wants. Meat fillers, hormones, genetically modified, chicken flavor injections, don’t those all sound DEEEELICIOUS?! I sat at lunch with coworkers last week and at least half of them kept a “don’t ask don’t tell” policy of their own regarding their food. They did not want to feel bad or know what they were putting in their body. That attitude is why places like McDonald’s continue to profit. No one wants to know the journey from beginning to end that meat took to get to you. As I said before, ignorance is bliss. But they know there is a truth, the choice being made is to not face it because you’d prefer not to feel gross or guilty about your Big Mac. I’m not asking the world to go vegetarian and neither are the majority of sustainable food and meat advocates. It is sad that one small cheeseburger can have such a large impact. Just think!
