Just like the title says, ignorance IS bliss. I will admit, I lived in this place for a while with what goes on in the world. There were times I’d watch the news and then be so angry and frustrated with all that is wrong. Now that I’ve come out of that bubble, nothing has really gotten better, but now I’m a participant in doing my part. The reason I bring up this topic is because I was listening to a conversation of co-workers discussing eating meat, buying locally, organics and avoiding books and films regarding the truth of our food. One person said he knows about Food, Inc. but doesn’t want to see it because he knows it will make him change his eating habits. The eating habits that allow you to eat carefree of thinking about where your food comes from and the effect it has on your body, the environment, the animals, the farmers and everything in between. I did love when I didn’t know what I know now. Unfortunately, I decided to watch the films and read the books, and have since not been able to eat meat. I don’t believe I’ll be a lifetime vegetarian, I just need to learn how to know where my meat comes from. My decision was actually less based on what factory farming does to the environment and more about what we are putting in our bodies and the treatment of animals. Those were the most shocking facts I read. I have ripped off the cape of blissful ignorance, and am for the first time, making decisions and changes in my life that are for a greater good, or at least I hope they are. I see the population of people that don’t care, and to put it simply, it’s just not cool. I respect everyone’s decision on all these issues, and I’m not asking everyone to see it how I do. I think mainly I just want people to care to know the truth and then decide. I also don’t like being referred to as one of “those” people because I’ve made a decision for myself after educating myself.

I spoke at The Down 2 Earth expo in Boston a few weeks back. The topic was green and holistic parenting, which I am technically qualified to speak about as the spokesperson for the Holistic Moms Network. Boston is an incredibly beautiful city, and my husband and our two sons and I took advantage of the historical sites and the excellent vegan food we discovered in Chinatown. It was a great trip.
What made the trip even better was that we stayed at the apartment of friends of ours who were visiting Los Angeles; thus we had the apartment to ourselves. It was in a wonderful part of Boston called Brookline, minutes from the subway, supermarkets, tons of restaurants and a laundromat. We are very close with these friends, so we felt very comfortable in their adorable place. In addition, they have a one year old, so there were plenty of toys for my boys (who are 4 1/2 and 20 months) to play with.
The trip was interesting, though, because these friends of ours are not obsessed (as I tend to be) about green stuff. I say this with absolutely no judgement or malice. They are wonderful caring and thoughtful people who are raising a securely attached and extended breastfed baby (which indeed are two features they share in common with all of my green and holistic friends in LA!), but their apartment was somewhat of a vacation for me. Let me explain how. (more…)

I know I went on and on last week about the oil spill, and believe me I could have continued this week but I thought I’d spare all of you from reading my rants. Instead you can listen to Jon Stewart. He knows just how to juxtapose the right information to show you the sad truth while giving you a chuckle. I watched the clip of him slamming people for the response to the oil spill. It’s darn funny!

Spring is here and heading toward summer. Time to see what’s fresh at your local farmer’s market. You can take a weekend afternoon and stroll to meet your friendly farming neighbors. You can also choose to join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. You pay a set amount, usually $15-25, and get a box full of produce that’s in season. I have a friend that did this and she got a TON of stuff. It was insane. Her refrigerator looked like it sprouted and was overgrown with all kinds of leafy greens. I’m going to hit my local farmer’s market this weekend and stock up.
You can find your local farmer’s market or CSA by visiting LOCAL HARVEST. Just type in your zip code and VWALLAH!
