The Future is in the Design!

A friend sent me an interesting blog link today.  I visited the blog to find a young college freshman with big green design ideas.  My first reaction was, “Wow, this is impressive.”  I thought this for no other reason than I think he is at least thinking outside of the box.  Looking for solutions.  While several people pointed out some holes in his design plan, it’s still worthy of checking out.  It’s an Eco Coke Bottle Design.  And it’s for his midterm.

I’m sure he’s gotten quite a bit of attention from this design idea based on all the comments and other social media.  It’s a bummer that some people can’t get out of their own way and be positive and supportive of this. One guy left a comment about him being a vending machine owner and HOW will square bottles not get jammed and that green is great IF it works.  Well hello Debbie Downer.  Maybe other things would change to accommodate a changing future, ever think of that Mister Square Peg in a Round Hole?  There is a way to have constructive criticism and not sound like you are just trying to be a little bit of an A-hole.  Alright, maybe his comment annoyed me more than anyone else, but still.  This is an 18 year old freshman with a midterm project.  It’s not like he was about to launch this new product.  Obviously it would evolve and more work would be done.  Like initially it seems like an amazing idea, but someone else pointed out something about carbonation and pressure and how that works with the shape of the bottle.  Not sure what the facts are there, but I’m sure Andrew Kim of Design Fabulous will work it out.  Good job Andrew.  Green Justice supports your effort.  Hope you get an A!

Is Recycling Cost Feasible For All?

I’ve recently encountered a business that does not recycle and when I asked if they recycle the answer came down to it not being cost effective for them.  That is disappointing to hear.  I was told as soon as it is financially feasible they would be more than happy to arrange service.  I knew then I was not going to win that battle by telling him how it will reduce waste and help the environment.  One thing green can’t beat is the dolla dolla bills y’all.  This same cost feasibility issue prevents lots of businesses from recycling.  My plan is to research the costs involved and see if I were a business I could find a service that is affordable.  I’m hoping I find agreeable results to pitch to this business owner.

In my new travels to lovely Detroit, Michigan I visited the MGM Grand to play some cards.  Have you ever noticed how many water bottles live and die in a casino? They have their own branded small sized bottles and I saw no recycling.  Now thinking back to my Vegas visits I don’t recall seeing recycling available on the casino floors.  I hope they aren’t going with “it’s not cost feasible.”  If anyone can afford a recycling service it has to be casinos. I’m going to look in to this when I hit the card room next week.

Have any of you encountered businesses that aren’t recycling?  Do you know why they don’t?  Let’s see if we can change that!
